I see nothing wrong with washing a horn in warm water as long as it is done
properly. Tepid soapy water can clean up the messiest of instruments. Make
sure you remove keys, rods and screws and dry everything off well when done.
To clean the bore, use a soft bottle brush about a half inch in diameter. Be
careful about touching the springs. Blue steel hurts when you stick
yourself and anything else is soft and will bend when pressure is applied.
If the instrument is wood, a light swabbing with bore oil is OK too. Just
make certain to wipe away any excess before reassembling the horn. I eat
when playing in the pit and this is how I clean my instruments when they
need cleaning. I have done it for more than 30 years with no negative
results.
