I would definitely recommend using a mouthpiece patch. For marching,
probably the thick black rubber Runyon type, although I find the thinner
clear ones from Bay, Selmer, Yamaha, etc. preferable for day-to-day
playing. It might also be smart to use an entirely different setup. No
sense breaking your neck trying to play a tiny tip opening and a #6 reed
for marching. Use a larger opening and a softer reed and save the lip for
something important.
