But I'm sure you agree that you don't want to do it in such a way that
it affects the intonation of the high note.

Perhaps that was what your coach was on about.

On the other hand, what your teacher and Walter are saying is that it
can be a useful technique, and one worth learning. I agree.

Only you (and those listening to you) can judge whether or not the
technique is ill-advised on a particular occasion.
