OK, I can understand this.

It just seemed like an interesting idea to ponder. Do ladies
personalize musical instruments (or anything else, for that matter) more
than men do?

Here in Hickland [snip] I guess I am proof that the stereotype about
West Virginians being stupid hicks is true. You have no idea how hard I
try to hide where I am from and who I should be.

Nothing could be farther from the truth, Rebecca !!!

I am totally caught off guard. Actually, my own parents settled down
and farmed in West Virginia soon after they were married, rocky soil and
all. The war dragged them to other states --- but when I was in junior
high school, my parents took me and my brother on a vacation. One
night, in a hotel in West Virginia, my parents turned very 'giggly' and
were trading very strange looks with each other. It turned out that
(to the best of their knowledge) I was conceived in West Virginia.

....anyway, I have travelled several times in both of the Virginias and
the Tennessee hills and so forth. It is beautiful country, and filled
with the best of culture and delicious cooking. While Appalachian
moonshiners and Li'l Abner and ghost stories make good themes for
fiction, there are **plenty** of 'hicks' camping out on Malibu Beach in
California as well and plenty of uneducated and/or boorish folk in every
big-city slum across the nation.

I don't mean to be confrontational, Rebecca, but you have *absolutely*
nothing to be ashamed of. I assure you that nobody else on this list
has entertained the thought --- not even for a moment -- that there's
anything 'hick-ish' about you. You may just as well worry that someone
thinks you're an alien from Jupiter.

Be proud of yourself, young lady! "Hicks' don't play (among other
things) classical clarinet and 2 or 3 other instruments, and they don't
pine to attend a music camp.

Regards,
Bill
