The "propeller wood clarinet" was a Pan American model sold by Conn in the
1950s. It had a composite body with a composite outside layer that looked
like light wood grain -- orange and black stripes.

The story was circulated (I'm not sure whether or not by Conn) that it was
made from propellers from WW II aircraft, but that was plainly false, since
the entire instrument was plastic.

They were really nice looking but didn't stay in production long, because the
outside layer delaminated from the core, making the instrument useless.

They come up on eBay every couple of months, at which time there are usually
queries on the Clarinet board. For more, go to the Clarinet board search
screen at http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/search.html?f=1 and search
on "propeller wood."

Best regards.
