Since I started this L'Etoile thread, I might as well finish it. I just
got back from its New York City Opera's performance. It is VERY much like
a Gilbert and Sullivan work, a humorous light operetta. The singing roles
are all Gilbert and Sullivan-esque, but the dancing and movements of the
actors are very much like the Marx Brothers. Each of the the three acts
began with an overture that was definitely NOT Gilbert and Sullivan in
nature, but quite nice orchestral music. The orchestra was TINY. (Tiny,
not Tinny! : D) The use of lighting and the overall staging was
superior, defying description- you have to see it. It was sung in English,
with brief parts in French (with English subtitles). Overall it was a
pleasant, light, funfilled experience.
