You don't need to do that. Just separate the top joint from the
barrel and lower joint, use a small screwdriver to remove the key, and
then poke the spring (or a matchstick, toothpick, whatever) into the
tube whilst looking down the bore. If there's detritus there, you can
see it emerge.

(Even if the animal is gone, sometimes the nest remains:-)

The problem can occur *especially* to people who swab their instruments
through diligently. It's usually a buildup of fibre in the tube.

BTW, I expect a quick answer, Bill, as to whether this is the problem
or not. No dodging the issue!-)
