Henrik,
Okay, I'll 'fess up. Started on clarinet, one of those school-rental, barely
maintained metal jobs. Bought an alto sax, in the next year. It was the
vehicle for learning that if one can play a very high harmonic note and hold
it for fifteen or twenty seconds, teenagers can get very excited (1953). Two
years later it was traded in for a tenor. Played bass clarinet in the school
orchestra, either parts for BCl or bassoon. Also played alto sax as needed.
Baritone sax was added on discovery it was easier to sight read bassoon
parts.
In succeedung years had chances to play Bari in large jazz band, and bass
clarinet in orchestra. They have great timbres. Only wish to have the need
to buy them now.
Met a fellow, about fifteen years ago, who played a Selmer metal clarinet,
which had a two-part body. How strange it was to hear really good sound out
of what most regard as material for lamp construction.
Has anyone in the group ever seen a screw-on removable bell for a metal
clarinet?
