Perhaps (?) what Gene is overlooking about the Bobby McGee lyrics is
that music is frequently and **legitimately** used to communicate images
of many types --- Grand Canyon Suite, Four Seasons, La Mer, Flight of
the Bumblebee, 1812 Overture, Nutcracker Suite, almost any religious or
ballet or musical theater or film music, and so forth.

The fact that a lyric depicts someone who has a twisted understanding of
something doesn't mean that the author is advocating or condoning the
twisted misunderstanding.

You may just as easily (and as nonsensically) condemn images of the
Crucifixion because the subject matter is (to you) distasteful.

For a while, my tag line was:

What is the purpose of a language? =A0 To be beautiful or wise or
pleasurable in itself? =A0 Or to describe many different things ---
beautiful or not --- to other people? =A0 This is why the question of
whether music is a 'language' is relevant.

Cheers,
Bill
