I purchased a rosewood C clarinet from Patricola to go with my other
Patricolas. It was great except that the throat b-flat was so flat that it
sounded like an A. I took it with me to New Orleans to ClarinetFest and
gave it to them at their booth to look at. They took it back to Italy with
them and sent me a note saying the only way to fix it was to make a 45 mm
barrel for it. I sent my OK and they made the barrel. It was ready for
shipping on Sept. 10th but got held up because of 9/11. It arrived back in
my hands in late October and has played very well, but only with that
barrel. There was evidence though that they had tried many things, as there
were new pads and the addition of their trademark Bb speaker key. There is
also a scooped out area in the bell. I must say, though, the clarinet plays
exceptionally well in tune as long as I use that barrel. I use standard
fingerings from top to bottom. My upper range is abbreviated though (high F
above the staff), due to jaw problems.
