Dear Fred:
I'm glad that you enjoyed the New York City Opera's production of 'Salome.' I happen to be the
E-flat clarinetist. I didn't think that the audience was permitted to listen to the orchestra until
the curtain went up, but I now stand corrected. The treacherous note in question, which I check
with the piccolo player before each performance, is a high concert 'A' - an F-sharp on the E-flat
clarinet. We just happened to get lucky on Sunday afternoon :-) For your information, the
orchestration also includes a Heckelphone.
Next time you attend, please come down to the pit and say 'hello.'
Best wishes.
Steve Hartman
Associate Principal Clarinet
