Bruce,

I won't rehash what everyone else has said. I think the problem
may be a totally overlooked problem...

I remember you saying your student was using a 2 3/4 reed. Maybe
it is time for her to go up to a 3 or 3 1/4 reed? Just because
you are playing on the same setup, doesn't mean the setup works
as well for her as it does for you. The stronger reed *might*
prolong life, and allow more workability.

The other thing I think could be a possibility is what your
student eats and drinks (either in general, or before playing.)
Heavily acidic drinks before playing, like sodas or juices, can
really break down a reed. If this student partakes in these
highky acidic drinks often, even if not right before playing,
she might be breaking the reeds down herself. I find that my
reeds do change consistency with diet changes, because your
saliva does change somewhat.
