I just got back from the New York City Opera's performance of Strauss'
Salome. The last time I saw it was 21 years ago at the Met, and am so
impressed as to the difference the subtitles made in my enjoyment of the
work, especially since it is in German and impossible for me to eke out
what is being said! The orchestra impressed me as being very large- there
were 4 clarinets, plus Eb and Bass, 3 bassoons plus contra, and I imagine
additions to the other sections as well. What a powerful work, and what
luscious music!. The worst part was before it began when the Eb and
piccolo tried to tune to each other on a very high note : D When that
passage came up in the opera, they were perfectly in tune and quite
pleasant sounding.

Sorry this is non-clarinet related, but I'm still floating around from the
experience!

Fred
