You should look at "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas." I forgot who wrote it, but
it is a super piece written for (I think) the UNLV band. It is challenging,
but so much fun for the players and the audience. It is a parody on someone
making a b movie about..... Godzilla eating Las Vegas. The french horns are
godzilla at the end, you hear a vegas lounge, the marching Elvises are in
there, and a lot of other things that are great fun. It is not easy but well
worth it.
Another great piece is "An American Elegy" by Frank Tichelli. it was
written to commemorate the tragic shooting at Columbine High School and was
premiered one year after the incident. It is a very moving piece.
Rhythmically not hard but musically quite difficult. The honors wind
ensemble you will be conducting should really enjoy it.
Another fine piece by Tichelli is "Blue Shades." It has a monster clarinet
solo in the last part. It is also not easy, but lots of solos and it goes
FAST.
These are a few off the top of my head that are good pieces. There are
plenty more of them. I will add a few more later. Good luck with the group.
