Last spring I attended a rehearsal of my wife's choral group and noticed
the gentleman that would be doing the recording was walking around the
small, long and narrow church. I asked him what he was listening for.
He said "Stand here". I did. He then had me move 4 feet away. What a
difference. In the first position the sopranos were practically wiped
out, in the second position they were balanced but the 1st altos got
weak. It was amazing how the reverberations can produce a totally
different aural product depending where the listener is located. He
eventually found the ideal spot for the microphones.
