Subj: [kl] Steven Hartman's Crusell recording

I received Steven's Crusell recording today --- three clarinet concertos
with full orchestra, happy music from beginning to end.

The highlight of this CD is unquestonably when clarinet, bassoon and
French horn romp and gambol in allegro across the musical landscape for
a full 15 minutes, sometimes in unison, sometimes in counterpoint, and
sometimes each in their own melody. To borrow a phrase: "It's a gas!"

My 15-yr-old daughter was in my car and she heard it. She hates to
admit that any music to which Dad listens is worth *her* attention, but
I saw her sneaking a peek at the CD liner and I asked her: "Well, what
do you think?"

Her reply: "How come you can't do that, Dad?"

.....anyway, if you enjoy music, I recommend that you get a copy. The
balance between orchestra and solo instruments is "just right."
They're playing together, not at each other; and (as I've posted before,
this is my standard for honest clarinet music) you won't feel as if
someone has stood you against the wall and fusiladed you with musical
ultimatums "for your own good".

Simply a pleasure to listen to: Bernard Crusell (early 19th century
Scandinavian), "Concertos Op. 1, 3 and 11", Centaur CRC 2495,
http://www.centaurrecords.com.

==================

Steven, I notice that it was recorded in a church which apparently is
well known (Trinity Church). Is this church an echo-filled church?

Cheers,
Bill
