Now that we're all merrily eviscerating spammers....

If you want to hear why Shadow Cat puked up a messily-dead cricket into my=20
computer keyboard cover while I was arranging F. Couperin's "Les Baricades=20
Mist=E9rieuses" ("The Mysterious Barricades") for clarinet quartet, go to:
=20
www.sibeliusmusic.com/cgi-bin/showscore.pl?scoreid=3D28476

You can listen to the computer (either Windows or Mac) play the score back=20
and/or you can print it out, free of charge, through the small Scorch=20
program. Scorch is freeware, on the site. When you click "play," Sibelius=20
will ask to download Scorch if your computer hasn't already got it.

My arrangement is for a quartet of soprano clarinet in Bb, alto clarinet in=20
Eb, bass clarinet in Bb and contrabass clarinet in Bb. However, I've=20
provided five parts, allowing an optional substitution of second clarinet in=
=20
Bb to replace the alto clarinet. If you might want to play the arrangement=20
on real clarinets, I suggest printing out the parts, because the paper-savin=
g=20
audio playback score has impossible page turns.

The quality of playback, using General MIDI, depends on your computer's soun=
d=20
card. I've tried two computers. On a whippersnapper HP Pavilion with=20
Pentium 4 running Windows XP Home Ed. and cheap but okay speakers, Scorch=20
produced a pretty good playback (though nobody would mistake it for real=20
clarinets) with Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. On an old, small IBM lapto=
p=20
with Windows 95 and the internal speaker, Roland MPO-401 produced total=20
silence, while the only other choice, Crystal FM Synthesis, was almost as=20
useless, because it gave out weird synthesizer tones with all notes below=20
bass clef C coming through as rhythmic farts of indeterminate pitch.

Since the Couperin score is my first attempt to write out a formal=20
arrangement, I'll be grateful if anyone wants to cricket it -- er, critique=20
it!
