Czechoslovakian brand) low C bass clarinet I purchased a couple of years ago.
Mine has the fifth RH low E-flat key, while yours does not, but that's the only
difference I can think of.
The intonation on mine was also very sharp so I sent the neck off to Charles
Bay, who inserted a tuning sleeve. After that, I had a very good local
repairman do a complete overhaul, and ended up with a beautiful instrument that
is a joy to play. It still has a few problem notes and intonation challenges,
but what instrument doesn't?
Is there anyone, like a local professional clarinetist, who could take a look
at the Kohlert and give you an idea of whether the cost of an overhaul would be
worth it? I was fortunate to have a bass clarinet expert advising me in my
search for a low C instrument, and I felt a whole lot better about spending the
money on the overhaul knowing he believed it would be worthwhile in the end.
