am wondering what companies would send some out on approval?

This is standard procedure with most of the larger stores, Janis.
Normally you order three mouthpieces, play them for a week, and return
two of them.

There is a service charge for this, of course. You pay $5-$10 for each
mouthpiece that you return, plus s&h. Presumably this compensates the
distributor for sanitizing and repackaging each mouthpiece. If you
scratch the mouthpiece or lose the original packaging, then you've ought
the mouthpiece.

If and when you've narrowed your search down to a particular model, some
of us (myself included) test three different mouthpieces of the same
model. Almost for certain, you will perceive differences between them
--- even though they are the same model by the same manufacturer. You
keep the one that you like and return the others.

So it's an added expense, but many of us feel that it's necessary (imo
and aodi).

Cheers,
Bill
