When I "work" a mouthpiece, I don't blindly go for "the numbers". I will often play then adjust, then play again until I get the right response and clarity of tone that I am looking for.

When I measure the tip opening, however, I find that the measurement comes out between 1.74 to 1.80. Coupled with a long curve, out to 48 or 49, this facing allows the player flexibilty to play the entire extended range of the instrument with confidence.

My favorite facing is something like this:

1.74
-----
48
35
24
18
10

This facing was not in any way my discovery. These numbers are consistent with a facing that has long been used by serious bass clarinetists, and I believe originated, or at least is associated with Ronald Reuben.

Lawrie Bloom tells me that Everret Matson used this facing, and I believe applied it to one of the mouthpieces he has used for years.
