A month ago, the List drifted off-topic from period instruments to
drones played on pocket violins and Eastern predecessors thereof....

I can now state with certainty that many bowed Eastern instruments with
flat bridges and three strings are frequently played (today, as well as
centuries ago) with all three strings sounding simultaneously, one
string being a drone and the other two carrying melodies.
