From: w10wright@-----.net (William Wright) Subj: [kl] My take on Beethoven violin concerto arranged for clarinet Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 20:58:37 -0400
The clarinet arrangement (imo - ymmv - aodi) is pleasant in some
sections, but it positively doesn't work in other sections. I assume
that if I knew the music better, I would discover that missing double
stops account for the most severe deficits in the clarinet arrangement.
The clarinet version (imo - ymmv - aodi) generally lacks the original
concerto's emotional power because a clarinet can't "bite" into an
attack the way that a violin can. This particular concerto needs
"bite" --- especially with the 3rd movement's theme, where the clarinet
is simply too smooth and gentle for the task --- although Collins does
an excellent job of making the finale work.
