I compared Canadian vs. U.S. regulations:
Unless my OSHA booklet is out of date (July 2001), the U.S. limit for 90
decibels (A-scale) is 8 hours, and there are no regulations below 90
decibels. They also advise: "Prolonged exposure to any noise above 90
decibels can cause gradual hearing loss"
Worker's Compensation Board in Canada (who I presume decides Canadian
government payments for hearing damage if an injury is proven) puts the
91 decibel limit at only 2 hours, and they put the 82 decibel limit at
16 hours.
So ear protection at 80 decibels is definitely a conservative number.
