I'm biting my tongue a little bit, Gary.

Certainly it's true that none of us can have everything we want.
Resources are finite, and the best skills attract the best resources.
Many of us must settle for second best because we're not 'The Best'.

But the comment that I've quoted does have a flavor of "Let them eat
cake." I can think of one example where even the world's best perform
to recorded music (Olympic ice skating), but in general if performing to
recorded music was as good as live music, then all of us would do our
recitals to Music Minus One recordings.

I heartily recommend Neil's post in this thread just a few minutes ago.
He said it better than I did.
