..... and I'd like to add one more thought:

Performances such as I saw yesterday **do** allow musically untalented
or underprivileged children (color guard, flag team, etc) a chance to
experience and enjoy first hand performing to music. This is certainly
a valid educational goal, even if it doesn't serve a single art
exclusively.

Even I have succumbed to such temptations --- when I was a spear carrier
in a semi-professional opera (Tosca) despite being unable to sing or
play a note.
