Subj: [kl] Earplug Replacement (late, sorry.)
Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 21:26:40 -0400

I've had two pairs of Etymotic custom plugs for about 5 years, a pair
at 15 dB and a pair at 25 dB attenuation. I've had only two
"problems" over that time:

1) I had the sets done in two different colors (one clear, one
orange) so they would be easy to distinguish - even though if you
look closely you can see that the higher attenuation filter is
thicker. The clear pair is mildly discolored, still fully functional
though. I might choose a different color next time. Purely a cosmetic
issue of the fitting only - not the filters.

2) Somehow one of higher attenuation filters got cracked in the case
about a year ago. I contacted Etymotic regarding purchasing another
filter and they were very gracious. They apologized profusely, sent
me a replacement for free, and asked me to send the cracked one back
so they could see why it failed.

I've not had any issue of ear canal deformation or change over that
period, they're still comfortable. One note about this style (as
opposed to foam or christmas tree-types) because they use a small
amount of "snugness" to seal, they create a fair amount of popping
noise (in my ears anyway) when you chew gum or food. There must be
just enough movement in the soft tissues of the ear that the jaw
movement opens and closes the seal.

Best to all on the list.
