My daughter is 16 and in the High School Band and the Jazz ensemble. In 7th
thru 10th grade they needed a bari sax player in jazz so she did the bari.
In band they needed a bass clarinet so she played that. In parades and
football games she played Bb clarinet. She was bored to tears with bass
clarinet parts but she did it anyhow.

This year , 11th grade, the band didn't have enough experienced 1st
clarinets. Kris has been taking private lessons for close to a year and has
improved her playing of the Bb clarinet so she auditioned and got a seat in
the 1st clarinet section. She also took bari sax lessons during the summer
so she has that down pretty good for the jazz ensemble.

By filling in with your alternate instrument you show the band and your band
leader that you are a team player willing to go out of you way to help the
entire band sound better. You become a more valued musician.

Taking this further, this type of attitude will help you out in the business
world.. at least it has for me.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Last night the Jazz Ensemble played for open house. After playing their jazz
set the entire sax section, including my daughter, picked up their Bb
clarinets for the Star Spangled Banner, not missing a note.

When I go to see local Swing Bands like the New York Swing Exchange you will
notice most, if not all of the sax players also play clarinet or flute
depending on the requirements of the score.

| I do play bari sax in the jazz band, well what we have of one, but I did
| this to gain experience on another instrument. Not to totally switch off
of
| clarinet! I tried talking to him, but there is no talking to him! I did
| think contra alto clarinet was a solution. I just thought of that a minute
| ago. The reason I have to play it is because we have very few people on
the
| bass line. I think it is wrong, but I don't know what to do about it. I
| really don't want this. I want to play clarinet! I could understand if
| clarinet was my secondary instrument, but it is my main instrument. That
is
| what I love to do, and that is what I am there to do. I just thought
playing
| sax in jazz band would be a fun and new experience.
