I can't count how many times I got to play the pit orchestra because I
could play every instrument that the book called for. I play clarinet
and bass clarinet but also perform on baritone sax and have played
bassoon and flute in the past. (not much flute, but some).

Keep hitting the clarinet hard at home and look for other opportunities
to perform in your area on clarinet. Try a local community college or
community band/orchestra that needs help. This way your band director
can do whatever he wants with you and it won't put you behind on the
clarinet. My high school director wanted to clone me about ten times to
fill out the other sections in the band. I marched baritone and
trombone and played trombone and bass trombone in the jazz band. In
college I added saxophone to my list and have even plunked a bit on
percussion. Look at this as an opportunity and not a setback. Attitude
is everything. Do you study privately? (you may have mentioned this but
I have not caught up as yet) Stufying privately can help keep you
motivated on Clarinet. If not, I'm sure we can find someone on the list
to either instruct or point you to another qualified individual in you
region.
