This could be an opportunity in disguise where if you are one of the
better players you may be able to move to tenor or alto at a later
time. In high school I was allowed to check out an alto sax to learn on
my own. When Jr. College arrived I was good enough to be the lead alto
player in Jazz Band but played 1st chair clarinet in Concert Band all
while learning the flute by playing flute quartets my instructor, who
was a flautist, and 2 others from the flute section in the Concert band.
A couple years later I was asked if I also played Tenor sax (it was for
a paying gig) I said 'Yes' and quickly borrowed a tenor. Borrowed it
for the next 10 years. Finally bought my own tenor, already had an
alto, and played the tenor professionally for the next 30 years (along
with the flute, piccolo, bass clarinet, alto sax, clarinet).
All the little opportunities can add up in a way that will allow you to
be ready for the bigger opportunities when they come along

Why are you not allowed to play your main instrument?

I can't even play clarinet here now, because I'm not allowed to.
