I am an alumna of the University of Miami and I would very highly recommend
my alma mater. Both the theory/composition and music engineering programs
are excellent. The music business program and jazz program are also
regarded as one of the best in their respective fields. There is a new
trumpet teacher there this year, so I don't know anything about him except
what is in his bio on the school's website. The Wind Ensemble and Orchestra
are both excellent and both have released CDs that are available from
Amazon, CDNow, etc. The second band, Symphonic Winds, is also very good for
a second band. It is a private school, so tuition is expensive, but they do
offer decent scholarships. The campus is beautiful and if your grandson's
friend likes football, basketball, or baseball, he'll be in heaven. :-)

Subject: [kl] School recommendations

A friend of my grandsons is a senior in high school. He played clarinet
quite well, but had to have surgery on his hand. His index and middle
fingers now doesn't bend right. He took up trumpet, and has become fairly
proficient on it. (He made first chair in clinic band last year. Following
one surgery last year, he played the trumpet left handed.)

He is interested in music as a major, but his interest is in composition.
He's looking for a school that has a good composition teacher(s) and as
well, music industry (recording studio, management, etc.). Area, by
preference, first of all, the southeast, (the family is moving somewhere
close to Jacksonville after this school term) then spreading outward from
there.

Thanks, in advance, for suggestions. I'll gather them and pass them on to
him.
