Gillian -

Have you tried playing double lip? I've been playing that way for years and
wouldn't go back. I can think of several possible benefits for your problem:

1. It keeps you from biting.

2. It changes your jaw position to a little more open, getting it to a place
that's different from where it had been cramping.

3. It makes you support the reed with your lips, thus taking some of the
work off your jaw.

It costs nothing and could be worth trying.
