Dear Jillian,
Your teacher's advice of playing through your pieces in your mind,
without actually putting the clarinet in your mouth, was very good
advice. I heard Jon Manasse give a master class in Norman Oklahoma last
year, and he described the process of studying the music and mentally
preparing. He said that he was "into it" so heavily one time, that he
accidentally got on the wrong airplane and ended up in the wrong city.
There are many problems that can be worked out by studying the
composition mentally, including proper counting, fingerings and knowing
exactly where you want to place your your phrasings.
I hope your doctor can find a solution, maybe surgery, for your jaw
pain. ANNIE
