I think folks are over-reacting just a tad here where the nail polish is
concerned. I'd agree that it isn't exactly the wisest thing to paint a
mouthpiece. But to claim ill health effects from playing on one is a little
extreme. People have used nail polish for many years to shield their "outer
layers" from contact with all kinds of things. When I was in high school
(back in the dark ages) I played trumpet in the marching band because I only
had a wooden instrument and I didn't want to take it outside. They didn't
have nylon cupped mouthpieces then, so we all painted the cups of our
mouthpieces with clear nail polish to shield our lips from the freezing
metal. It worked very well and I am still alive, without tumors or rashes
or any other ill effects from the use of the polish. Enough time has
elapsed to know whether it could even be carcinogenic or whatever other
disorder one might want to include in the list of horrible effects to
acquire from using such a "dangerous product". So what if they painted
their mouthpieces! How many stupid things did you do as a kid? Remove the
polish and buff the mouthpiece (if it's worth doing) and get on with life.

I'm from a small town in the middle of West Virginia. The music programs
here are very poor. We were never taught about what reeds to use and how
valuable mouthpieces are. Luckily one of us, being me, really cared about it

and developed some common sense. I use what works for me, rather than turn
it into who can make sound from the hardest reed contest. They have also
never paid for a mouthpiece. They use the ones that came with their
clarinets. I on the other hand wanted to sound good, so I paid 90 dollars
for a good one. Actually, I've bought more than one, but I have to supply
myself with mouthpieces for Bb, Eb, and alto clarinets, and alto, tenor, and

baritone saxophones. I think I've learned the value of these. Especially
with buying a bari sax mouthpiece, so I take good care of mine.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if I came to school tomorrow to find out they
all died. Nail polish is definately not a healthy thing to have in your
mouth. Yes, they pain the whole outside of the mouthpiece. Even the part
that goes in their mouth!
