Interesting conversation. I remember my husband telling me at one time
that someone called him a 'purist.' My husband responded with a
enthusiastic 'thank you.' The person actually meant as a criticism;
however, my husband knew this and chose to respond to it differently.

I think most people do use it in a negative manner. But it depends on
one takes it as well, no matter what the other's intentions.
