before I go, would like to tell about a great concert at Burghof in
Lörrach this evening.

Natalia Gutman - cello
Alexei Lubimov - piano
Kolja Blacher - violin
Jörg Widmann - clarinet
Natacha Maric - flute

Beethoven Piano Trio op. 121a
J. Brahms - clarinet trio op. 114
Bartok - Contrasts
Schönberg/Webern Kammersimfonie Nr. 1 op. 9

The Beethoven trio served as a means to try to get used to the
accoustics from the balcony. They tend to level dynamics out. It's
really not suited for chamber music.

The clarinetist Jörg Widman is 29 and professor in Freiburg (following
Dieter Klöcker's retirement). The Brahms Trio was wonderfully played,
very expressive and exciting. Widmann has a very delicate articulation
and clean, sweet tone. Sometimes he seemed to indulge in his tone at the
cost of the pulse but it always seemed to have some justification. I
would have prefered more color instead of the fantastic tone always
being the same and less bending of the pulse but I was glad to have
heard it this way.

The Bartok was magnificent especially the cadenza. Timing was striking
and wonderfully effective. The violinist played the last movement on one
instrument - Dan, sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. The clarinetist
changed back and forth, depositing his clarinets in upright position on
the floor with no stand. It made me a bit uneasy!

The Kammersinfonie was also completely captivating. The magnificent
Wagnerian cello opening took us immediately into Schönberg's world with
force. All five players seemed to understand each other's intentions
magically though the strings who sat outside in front could not have
seen the others very well. It was very well recieved and they had to do
an encore starting at the point of the cello flageolet passage.

I was almost dissapointed that I had a free ticket sponsored by the bank
and issued to the music school.

David
