Subj: [kl] OCR software for scanning music. Was "Bass clarinet parts"
Date: Tue, 1 Oct 2002 17:13:42 -0400

Gary Truesdail wrote, "If only some brilliant programmer would write and
OCR program for printed music."

Jeremy Yager responded, "I'm not certain of this, but doesn't the new
version of Finale (yes, $$$) offer this ability?"

Mark Charette answered, "Finale includes SmartScore, the program that does
the work. However, it is far from being 100% accurate."

William Wright, asked further, "....hmmmm, do the staff lines move, or do
the notes? Another deep metaphysical question."

Robert Moody offers, "I suggest that Finale does the job, but Sibelius 2
with PhotoScore does a much better job. And though not 100% still, it DOES
interpret the dynamics and other articulation markins as well as instrument
labeling so that the scanned products acts and responds like you typed it
yourself. Cool stuff. And yes...big $$$."
