David,

The recording you are looking for is probably "The Russian Clarinet" with
clarinetist Kelly Burke. It is on Centaur Records (CRC 2562) and is
available directly from their website
http://centaurrecords.com/

I think this is an excellent CD. The playing is first rate and the choice
of repertoire is interesting. Kelly (a good friend of mine from grad school
at U. of Mich.) travelled to Russia and unearthed some little-known but very
worthy compositions for this recording. She includes an arrangement of the
slow mvmt and scherzo from Shostakovitch's 9th Symphony. Sounds fun to play
and makes an effective cl/pn piece in my opinion. I'll leave it to others
to debate the philosophical/ethical ramifications of arranging a twentieth
century orchestral works for clarinet and piano!

Centaur Records has a number of other interesting clarinet CD's, including
several with Gary Gray and at least one with Kathy Pope. They also have
some good WW Quintet Cd's covering repertoire that is worthwhile but off the
beaten path.

I should mention that sometime in the next month or two, Centaur Records is
scheduled to release a CD with my chamber ensemble, Crescent Duo
(flute/clarinet with flutist Joanna Cowan White). It is titled "Flights of
Fancy: Crescent Duo" and includes works by Rutter, Arnold, Liptak, T.C.
David, Piston, Dietz, Sloan, Szalowski and David Gillingham. Three of the
works are trios with oboe, bsn, or saxophone. One of the works uses bass
clarinet.
