Thanks to Ken Shaw for reproducing the Duquès article from the fifties. Knowing a little about his
personal life, I had to chuckle when I read about his playing the end of 'Aida' with half of the
clarinet already packed away. Also, having known the way he spoke English, I'm sure that a student
'translated' his thoughts for the benefit of this article. When he said that some parts in C sound
better on the A than the B-flat, I think he meant that they are easier to play smoothly on the A.
Of course that is his opinion.
Augustin Duquès was a wonderful man as well as a great player. It is good to remember him.
