Or, just soak the mouthpiece in straight vinegar. Ten or so minutes in white
vinegar will loosen all the white mineral deposits as well as any other
collected dirt. Then rinse it in clear, cool water and wipe it dry with a
towel or other soft cloth.

I once had a student whose mother tried to sterilize his mouthpiece by
boiling it. Perhaps needless to say, the result was a badly misshapen mess.
