I understand your reaction, given my lack of specifics about the situation.
This boy isn't just acting bratty. He's normally well-behaved. A counsellor
told his mom that he probably invented an imaginary monster to slay to make
himself feel less helpless, because there's nothing he can do about a real
monster (speaking metaphorically) that showed up to threaten his family
shortly after he started learning clarinet. In another culture, maybe we'd
say he's instinctively practicing sympathetic magic. I hope life gets back
to normal soon for this strong family, but I think the kid needs his clarinet
right now. (Sorry I can't explain in more detail, but the mom who asked me
to ask the question for her also asked me to be careful about the family's
privacy.)
