What I meant was: wasn't the clarinet evolving into a new class of
musical instrument, whereas (perhaps I'm wrong?) didn't Stradivarius
simply build violins with superior tone without expanding the
instrument's compass or without enabling a full chromatic scale without
being a virtuoso, and so forth?
