Although length & bore can be overpowered by other factors, this doesn't
eliminate a perceivable sound difference if all other factors are equal.

So I decided to thumb through Deutsch's massive tome in search of an
actual experiment. Is there a set of "reasonable" conditions under
which most humans can reliably discriminate between the same melody
played on (say) A and Bb instruments?

Unfortunately, I coldn't find such an experiment in the book.

....and if I ever forget, PLEASE remind me that using big words and
complicated language in order to express a simple idea is.... <many
expletives deleted>.
