Oliver, I normally make no comments on mouthpieces because I have little
if any qualifications for doing so. But I do want to say that I played
the Mozart Requiem on my basset horn on Sept. 11 with the San Francisco
Midsummer Mozart orchestra and I had three mouthpieces to choose from,
all by a local mp maker named Clark Fobes. Two are professional level
mouthpieces and cost a bundle. One is his student model mothpiece and
which is about $30, but maybe I am underpricing it. I forget things that
don't cost much and remember with burning enthusiasm when they cost a lot.

My personal perspective was that the student model mouthpiece pleased me
most. I have no idea if it is better than the other two, but I liked
it, the conductor went crazy for the sound and Mark Brandenburg (who was
playing first to my second) and I just blew away the parts that evening.
I know that it is not the thing to like an inexpensive item, but when
the one I have allows me to play perfectly under the most professional
of conditions, I'm a happy camper.

I have heard that Fobes student model mouthpiece is quite popular. I
don't know and couldn't care less. But you could not possibly buy the
one I am using on my basset horn from me, though I am happy to sell you
my first born.
