Subj: [kl] Top ten reasons why to use the "wrong" clarinet
Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 10:08:25 -0400

10. It's just not made any more. Try to find a bass clarinet in A. Yes I
know Selmer did make them and Dan L. owned the last one made.

9. There is not enough time to change clarinets in rests or between
movements. Try Borodin Polovetsian Dances going from the Andantino movement
to the Allegro Vivo movement.

8. The clarinet you are on is up to pitch and right after you switch you
would have a very important solo and no time to get the clarinet up to
pitch. What's more important, playing in tune or playing on the "right"
clarinet?

7. You do not own a C or D clarinet. I know this isn't a valid reason but
sometimes it's just a fact of life-no money for another clarinet or you can
not find that clarinet.

6. The music or technique will flow better. I know another invalid reason,
but with working on the Eb Daphnes part (in B) I would give anything for a D
clarinet - the part is then in C!!

5. The tone color of the section needs to stay the same. If you are doing a
Schubert Symphony and both clarinet parts call for C clarinet, a conductor
would like both clarinetist to be on C clarinets or both on Bb clarinets not
a mix of one on C and one on Bb. There is too much difference in the tone
color.

4. The part goes beyond the practical range of the instrument. I'm thinking
of the end of the clarinet solo in the Ginastera Variations Concertant where
sometimes the last 8 notes are done on Eb clarinet otherwise on Bb clarinet
you go up to a double high D.

3. The part goes beyond the physical range of the instrument. I'm thinking
of low Eb written in Bb clarinet part.

2. You pick up the wrong clarinet and have to transpose until you can pick
up the right horn. It happens.

And the number 1 reason to use the "wrong" clarinet:

1. Dan Lesson is in the audience and you just want to get his goat.- Just
kidding Dan.
