One of the most interesting aspects of Mazzeo's article for me was that
Stravinsky apparently acknowledged to Mazzeo that there were two
different sorts of breath marks. One was to be less conspicuous in order
to preserve the shape of a phrase in spite of the physical need to
breathe. The other took more time at the ends of phrases. Stravinsky
wrote at the top of the music that the tempo markings and breath marks
should be strictly adhered to, but never pointed out in print that not
all breath marks are created equal.
