I always listen in wonder to this conversation because (usually) is ends
up as a discussion of "Who knows best?"
What a composer wants (or wanted) is worth discussing, of course.
Which is why I asked about Three Pieces. But since there's no
invariant yardstick for "best", what's so wrong if a musician is
inspired by something and wants to carry forward with his/her own
interpretation?
In some situations, the performer promises to deliver a performance as
the composer would've wanted it. Truth in advertising, etc. But
honestly..... how many times does the average person come away from a
performance saying "Wow! That was _so_ accurate!" rather than "Wow! I
enjoyed that!" ??
There's no harm if accurate and enjoyment coincide. But why is it such
a sin, given that equipment and tastes _do_ evolve, if a performer says,
"Now that I've heard it this way, I want to <whatever>."
Oh well, EMDV (everyone's mileage does vary).
Cheers,
Bill
