Modern copyright is largely based upon the British 'Statute of Anne' of

Is there any room to ask, then, if composers of Mozart's time issued
mutiple editions in order to (borrowing from Allen=A0Levin) defend their
royalities? The result could be that, if the composer assumed that
"real musicians would know better" and ignore the publisher, future
historians would be confounded by contradictory evidence.

Now that Dan Leeson has returned (which makes me glad), I preface my
next paragraph with my respectful apology:

Wouldn't it be a weird twist if Mozart asked for a certain basset
horn/range in order that he could confound plagiarists?

....and also since Dan is back, does he know of an answer to my Three
Pieces question?

Thank you,
Bill
