Stravinsky did a lot of "rewrites" like that. He had been having problems
with the copyrights to many of his early works. Particularly Russian
copyrights. The "new" editions were intended to protect his royalties. He
assumed that performers - as opposed to publishers - would know to use the
correct instrument.
