Andrew,

The hairline crack probably expands with the warm air when you
play it. It probably needs to be pinned. I would say there is a
GREAT likelyhood that is what the problem is, if you tried it
playing it without the keys (fingers directly on the holes.)

You might try (for diagnostics only) taking tape and covering
the crack, adding about 2 or 3 inches up to the top of the joint
in the same line the crack has, and then banding it with metal
wire, just to see if it plays any better...DON'T use this for a
permanent solution...lol.

If it plays even slightly better, I'd say it is the crack for
sure. If not, you would still have to have a repair person
repair it for the pin work.
