Subj: [kl] question to professional clarinettists on how often they change mouthpieces
Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 19:59:01 -0400

*I* was the one who posted the original question (not Joe,) and
it was not ambiguous. I don't think anyone's opinions are crap -
they are opinions, pure and simple. We all have them, and they
are all different in some way.

Joe was quick to jump on David Naden, but David had been quick
to jump on me for things very obviously not present in my post,
because he didn't read the whole posting, or maybe skimmed it
and misunderstood my point. NO BIG DEAL.

Let's all breath a little, and stop the flame war before it
becomes out of control. Let's go back to the first question,
which I am posting here again for the third time...(and which
some very nice people have already answered - THANKS!) This is
something I am really interested in, as it helps me teach.

HOW OFTEN do you change your PRIMARY mouthpiece(s)?

I did specifically ask for professionals' opinions, but if
students want to answer, please note on the reply that you are a
student so I can get an idea on the frequency of changing
mouthpieces for a student against the frequency of a
professional musician changing mouthpieces.

I have changed my mouthpiece for Bb/A TWICE in 4.5 years. I am
getting ready for another change, to one of Christopher Hill's
newly faced mouthpieces, which are the best mouthpieces *I* have
played on, regardless of makers and models I have previously
tried. I have other mouthpieces that work for me, and others
that do not. I don't have any BAD mouthpieces, because I throw
them away (i.e. chipped, warped mouthpieces that are made from a
blank not worth refacing.)

Notice I said *I* and not *WE*. I am not telling anyone what the
best mouthpiece is, nor am I telling them what to buy, or that
they should change their mouthpiece since it has been two years
since their last change.

That disclaimer is, of course, because I speak in broken
english...I am from L.A. (Lower Alabama) and I would hate for
someone to misunderstand my question, or reply again, and take
offense to it.

Thank you for all being understanding of how illiterate I am,
and for taking the time to read my post all the way through.
<evilgrin>

I do look forward to the answers about the mouthpieces. SPEAK
SLOWLY...I can't read any better than I can write. LOL
